PROJECT PARTICIPANTS

Lead Organization Cast Analytics Vancouver
Partner Applied CCM Inc Ottawa
Partner Empower Operations Corp Surrey

PROJECT DETAILS

Total Project Value: $215,480.95
Value of NGen Support: $96,213

PROJECT BRIEF

The project partners developed a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of an industrial sand cast component using open-source software. This model was validated against high-resolution temperature data that the team obtained by instrumentation of a commercial foundries production process.

A framework was developed to automate the numerical optimization process by employing AI-driven algorithms and automating the generation of mold geometries. The motivation was to improve product quality, performance and economics by allowing the AI-driven algorithms to find the optimum process parameters rather than rely on trial and error methodologies and engineering experience, something which is currently a scarce resource in an industry suffering a chronic shortage of skilled personnel.

PROJECT DETAILS

Total Project Value: $173,421.68
Value of NGen Support: $82,051.50

PROJECT BRIEF

Through this project, Datec Coating Corporation and its partner Process Research Ortech Inc. successfully completed at technical feasibility study on a novel catalytic distillation (CD) process technology for the production of performic acid (PFA), a next generation green chemistry for water treatment applications.   PFA provides outstanding efficacy for the treatment of bacteria, viruses and other emerging pathogens of concern, without producing hazardous disinfection byproducts associated with chlorine disinfection.  The results of this project demonstrated that the criterion for catalytic distillation are met and that the method of manufacture is technically feasible. With this success, a new company, Symbient Environmental Technologies Inc. was created to exploit these research results and commercialize the technology.   Symbient subsequently received a $1,500,000 grant from Sustainable Development Technology Canada to support these commercialization efforts. Aside from water treatment, as a powerful oxidant and disinfectant, PFA can be used in other industries including industrial effluent treatment, the food and beverage industry, medical device disinfection, oil and gas industry, pulp and paper industry and the specialty chemicals industry including the valorization of biomass into value added products.

Their automated technology allows
fabrication of highly consistent 3D fiber scaffolds, with precise control over their thickness, architecture, and porosity, allowing us to create ECM analogues that closely match a natural scaffold. Prior to this innovation, the poor manufacturing scale limited the industrial application of these bio-composite materials. The versatility of this technology, which can now adapt to different types of proteins, enables the production of a wide range of biofibers which can be used in multi-billion-dollar industries such as medical applications and sustainable textiles.

PROJECT PARTICIPANTS

Lead Organization Genecis Bioindustries Inc. Toronto
Partner StormFisher Ltd. London

PROJECT DETAILS

Total Project Value: $5,999,361
Value of NGen Support: $2,628,736

PROJECT BRIEF

Genecis and StormFisher successfully implemented a bioprocessing system that significantly enhances the value of organic waste streams. By integrating Genecis’ biotechnology into StormFisher’s existing infrastructure, the project increased the value of organic waste by 10 times compared to conventional biomethane production.

This was achieved through a novel process that diverts a portion of organic waste feedstock into PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoates) bioplastics, a sustainable and biodegradable alternative to traditional plastics. This advancement not only reduces carbon emissions but also establishes a new revenue stream by transforming waste into high-value, environmentally friendly materials. As a result of the collaboration Genecis was able to launch a consumer brand, Mad Tea, which uses bioplastics to make compostable tea pods. The brand sold out of product within the first month and generated over $500K of revenue in the first 3 months!

The collaboration demonstrates the potential for industrial-scale circular economy solutions, bridging the gap between waste management and sustainable material production.
