Next Generation Manufacturing Canada (“NGen”) is the industry-led not-for-profit organization that leads the Canadian government’s ambitious investment in the Advanced Manufacturing Supercluster, matching federal funds and private investments to industry-led projects.

We are dedicated to building next-generation manufacturing capabilities nationally. Its mission is to position Canadian companies as global leaders in the application of leading technologies to manufacturing products and processes, create the most competitive advanced manufacturing supply chains in the world, and develop the world’s most talented advanced manufacturing workforce, thereby enhancing Canada’s overall economic prosperity.

We promote technology adoption, skills improvements and greater collaboration between technology and manufacturing to help Canadian companies of all sizes navigate the global shift to advanced manufacturing. We use data to link companies, researchers, and investors so they can work together to invent new products or processes. By 2023, the federal government has committed to investing up to $950 million in its five superclusters to drive major economic, social, and industrial benefits for the country. The Government allocated an additional $750 million to the Supercluster program in its 2022 budget.

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver in partnership with other members of the NGen team, an organization that can demonstrate value to its Stakeholders and Partners and creates beneficial Economic impact within Canada.
  • Supporting industry in developing strong project proposals, IP strategies, commercialization strategies, project plans and financial project structures, preferably in both official languages. Identifying technology trends and helping to align them across projects. Work to identify companies for projects to partner with.
  • Assist with the project development through thorough review of the project screening documents to ensure compliance.
  • Review of the preliminary project applications responses and provide written and face-to-face feedback of the application responses.
  • Reviewing and collaboratively developing the applicant’s initial project submission documents into the required quality of documents needed for contracting.
  • Ongoing feedback with project applicants until contracting is complete.
  • Demonstrate competence in working with and advising project teams with regards to other Government organizations and funding programs.
  • Develop strong and complementary working relationships with a wide range of external organizations that allow for mutually beneficial initiatives and programs to be supported.
  • Provide expert guidance to project applicants in best practice methods for project development and grant applications. Ensure high-quality and thorough application submissions in applicable project streams.
  • Provide inputs to a project reporting system permitting NGen executive staff (and other stakeholders as required) a regularly refreshed overview of the projects and the NGen in the project pipeline.
  • Supporting the Delivery Program Team in the management of change, variation, risk and opportunity, recovery and acceleration of projects within the In particular, providing input on Technical Scope variations and budget variations.
  • Working with the project applicants and with the Project Finance team in developing budget forecasts for projects.
  • Working with Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, FedDev Ontario, other funding bodies, as appropriate, to ensure alignment of technology development facilitation throughout the full innovation ecosystem.
  • Work with our communications and marketing group to create and maintain external publication / display material of a technical nature that can be utilized as part of the Industry showcasing capability and to publicize NGen members activities in order to attract further and wider participation.
  • Report the project activity to ISED through the Project Activity Report process.

What YOU will bring
to the table:

Desired Skills and Expertise
  • Education to at least Bachelor level in a relevant Science or Engineering, Business development field.
  • Desirable recognized professional institutional status.
  • Prefer primary proficiency in French and English language competency.
  • Minimum 8 years of Science, Technology or Engineering background, working in either relevant advanced manufacturing technology companies or from an industrial sector.
  • Comfortable with and capable of advising C-suite executives.
  • Experience of developing and delivering complex technology projects or experience of launching new products into production.
  • Knowledge of Technologies that could transform the manufacturing industry such as Industry 4.0, digital processes, additive manufacturing, advanced materials, cyber security, artificial intelligence.
  • Experience working with Government funding or private venture capital funding organizations.
  • Experience of new product development cycles including understanding of TRL / MRL challenges; working with academia and partners throughout the supply chain.
  • Recognition of future technology and market trends and the ability to relate them to the Canadian Advanced Manufacturing sectors and the opportunities this could create.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills recognized public presenter and experience of media interaction.
  • Desirable to have a strong advanced manufacturing network and widely recognized within Industry groups as an approachable, technology-agnostic supporter.
